Shimla is a tourist destination is also the capital of the Himachal state. It is situated in the north-west Himalayas. Shimla is often referred to as the "Queen of Hill Stations" (a term coined by the British). It has been blessed with all the natural bounties, one can think of. Shimla, draped in forests of pine, rhododendron, and oak, experiences pleasant summers and cold, snowy winters. The biggest industry in Shimla is hotel, travel and tourism. The place is also famous for its natural beauty,architectural buildings, wooden crafts and apples.

You can visit Shimla during winter months. The hill station witnesses' heavy snowfall and tourists throng Shimla in December during Christmas and New Year. Winters are also an ideal time to visit Shimla if you love adventure sports like skiing and ice-skating. Though moving around is a bit difficult when it snows, just playing in the snow will lift up your spirits and make sure you have a wonderful vacation.

By Air: Shimla can be easily reached by air. The place has its own airport at a place called Jubbarhatti, which is located at a distance of 23 kilometers from the main city center. Flights from New Delhi, Chandigarh and Kullu (another hill station) operate on a daily basis. Jagson Airlines is the flight that operates from these places on a regular basis.
By Train: The nearest railway station that connects Shimla to neighboring states is at Kalka. This place is located at a distance of 96 kilometers from Shimla. From Kalka, it takes around 6 hours to reach Shimla. The frequency of trains that ply from Kalka to Shimla is pretty good, with atleast 4 trains plying to and fro from Shimla.
By Road: Shimla is well connected to neighboring places like New Delhi and Chandigarh through national highways. The journey from Delhi to Shimla by road takes approximately 8 hours. The highways are well maintained by the authorities and are a pleasure to drive on. There are many tourist buses that ply from neighboring places to take tourists to this beautiful hill station.

The Mall: Mall is the main shopping centre of Shimla. It also has many restaurants, clubs, banks, bars, Post Offices and tourist offices. People walk up and down the Mall slowly, stopping to gossip, as it is the main meeting place for everyone. The Ridge and Scandal point are the two main meeting points at the Mall.
Christ Church: The yellow Christ Church is the most prominent building in Shimla. It is reputed to be the second oldest church in northern India and was consecrated after 1857.
State Museum: Himachal State Museum is a great place to visit for all those, who are interested in knowing the historical past of the country. The museum is a colonial structure surrounded by sprawling lawns. It houses valuable collection of coins, photographs and local handicrafts.
Jakhu Hill: Jakhu hill is situated at a distance of 2.5 km from Shimla and provides the best view of the city from an elevation.The picturesque surroundings of the place are quite relaxing, providing ample opportunity to unwind in the lap of Mother Nature. The Viceroy Lodge Situated at a distance of 2 km from the State Museum, the Viceroy Lodge is a majestic grey colored building, dotted by pine trees. It was constructed in 1888 as the residential accommodation of Viceroy Lord Dufferin.
Summer Hill: Situated at a distance of 5 kms. from the Ridge is the lovely township of Summer Hill at a height of 6,500 ft. on the Shimla-Kalka railway line.
Annandale: Developed as the playground of Shimla, Annandale is 2-4 kms. from the Ridge at a height of 6,117 ft. It is a favorite spot for cricket, picnics and the princely game of polo.

The Himachal Emporium: Near the Mall Road, this emporium has a reasonable collection of local handicrafts and pottery dogs.
Tibetan Refugee Handloom Shop: At the other end of the Mall, is the showroom for the local development project and sells carpets and clothing and other Tibetan crafts.
Lakkar Bazaar: Meaning "Wood Market", this is Shimla s main souvenir market and sells wooden massage wheels and rollers. This is a good place to pick up inexpensive mementoes to take home.
