Only a Kevalin can truly grasp reality in all its aspects; all other forms of knowledge remain partial and limited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jainism distinguishes five main types of knowledge, with Keval Gyan as the fifth and highest:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Mati J\u00f1\u0101na<\/strong> \u2014 ordinary sensory and mental knowledge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>\u015aruta J\u00f1\u0101na<\/strong> \u2014 scriptural or heard knowledge.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Avadhi J\u00f1\u0101na<\/strong> \u2014 clairvoyant knowledge (direct perception of distant objects or events).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mana\u1e25paryaya J\u00f1\u0101na<\/strong> \u2014 knowledge of others&#8217; thoughts\/minds.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kevala J\u00f1\u0101na<\/strong> \u2014 perfect omniscience.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>The first four are partial and can coexist with some karmic veils; only the fifth removes all veils completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Path_to_Attaining_Keval_Gyan_The_Gunasthanas\"><\/span>The Path to Attaining Keval Gyan: The Gunasthanas<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Jain texts outline the soul&#8217;s spiritual evolution through <strong>14 gunasthanas<\/strong> (stages of spiritual development). Keval Gyan is attained at the advanced stages after rigorous purification:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Up to stage 12 (<strong>k\u1e63\u012b\u1e47a ka\u1e63\u0101ya vitar\u0101ga chadmastha<\/strong>): All deluding (mohaniya) karmas\u2014anger, pride, deceit, greed\u2014are annihilated, along with knowledge- and perception-obscuring karmas. Passions are destroyed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stage 13 (<strong>sayogi kevalin<\/strong>): Omniscience with residual bodily\/yogic activity (the kevalin still has a physical body sustained by non-obscuring karmas).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Stage 14 (<strong>ayogi kevalin<\/strong>): Omniscience without activity; all remaining karmas are shed just before moksha (liberation), leading to immediate siddha state upon death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This progression requires intense <strong>samyak darshan<\/strong> (right faith), <strong>samyak jnana<\/strong> (right knowledge), and <strong>samyak charitra<\/strong> (right conduct), plus severe <strong>tapas<\/strong> (austerity), <strong>nirjar\u0101<\/strong> (karmic shedding), and complete detachment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Historical_Examples_of_Kevalins\"><\/span>Historical Examples of Kevalins<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The most celebrated attainment is that of <strong>Lord Mahavira<\/strong> (Vardhamana), the 24th Tirthankara. After 12\u00bd years of extreme asceticism, he attained Kevala Jnana near the village of Jrimbhikagrama (or similar location per sources) on the banks of the Rijupalika River, around 557\u2013556 BCE, in the 13th year of his renunciation. At that moment of supreme enlightenment, he perceived the entire universe in all its details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other Tirthankaras also attained it, as did figures like <strong>Gautama Ganadhara<\/strong> (Mahavira&#8217;s chief disciple) and <strong>Jambuswami<\/strong> (traditionally considered the last person to attain Keval Gyan in our current time cycle, thousands of years ago). In the present era, Jain belief holds that Keval Gyan is extremely rare or impossible in certain regions and time periods (e.g., Bharat Kshetra for the next ~84,000 years per some traditions), though the potential always exists in the soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Significance_and_Implications\"><\/span>Significance and Implications<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Attaining Keval Gyan marks the near-end of the soul&#8217;s journey in samsara (cycle of birth and death). The Kevalin lives out the remaining lifespan with perfect equanimity, teaching the path to others (as Tirthankaras do). Upon the body&#8217;s natural end, the soul ascends to <strong>Siddhaloka<\/strong> as a liberated <strong>Siddha<\/strong>\u2014eternally blissful, formless, and free from karma forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Philosophically, Keval Gyan underscores Jainism&#8217;s core emphasis on self-effort, non-violence, and the destruction of ego and passions. It affirms that liberation is not granted by any external deity but realized through personal purification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In essence, Keval Gyan is not merely &#8220;knowing everything&#8221; in an intellectual sense\u2014it&#8217;s the direct, unobstructed experience of reality itself, where the distinctions between knower, known, and knowing dissolve into pure consciousness.
