When an animal dies in the wild, vultures can consume the carcass quickly. This helps prevent decaying remains from becoming breeding grounds for harmful microorganisms and reduces the accumulation of dead animals in the landscape.

India’s vulture populations suffered a particularly severe decline during the 1990s and early 2000s. The use of the veterinary drug diclofenac in livestock was a major factor behind the collapse of several Gyps vulture populations.

Conservation programmes, safer veterinary practices and monitoring of nesting populations have since become important parts of vulture conservation in India.

A 2025 Wildlife Institute of India assessment documented 213 sites with vulture nesting activity, including 103 sites within protected areas. Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan together accounted for the highest number of nesting sites in that assessment.

Vulture Species Found in India

1. Today, it is one of India’s most threatened vulture species.

It gets its name from the distinctive pale or white area on its lower back, contrasting with its predominantly dark body. The species experienced a catastrophic decline from the 1990s onwards, largely associated with diclofenac poisoning.

Where can travellers see White-rumped Vultures?

They can occur across parts of the Indian subcontinent, particularly in landscapes containing suitable nesting trees and feeding areas. Wildlife enthusiasts may encounter them in parts of central and northern India, although sightings cannot be guaranteed.

The Wildlife Institute of India’s recent assessment found White-rumped Vulture nesting activity at 69 sites, with 945 nests recorded at those sites.

Wildlife travel tip

Look towards tall trees and open skies around protected areas and rural landscapes. It is primarily associated with the Indian subcontinent and occurs particularly across central, western and peninsular India.

The species was severely affected by the same veterinary-drug crisis that impacted other Gyps vultures. It is mainly associated with the northern plains of India and northeastern India.

This is one of the most difficult vultures to encounter because of its critically endangered status and restricted distribution. The state is home to major wildlife destinations such as Bandhavgarh National Park, where Egyptian Vultures can be observed, while the wider state has significant vulture nesting activity.

For travellers, a Madhya Pradesh wildlife holiday can therefore combine:

Tiger safaris

Birdwatching

Vulture spotting

Forest exploration

Nature photography

Rajasthan

Rajasthan is another important state for vulture conservation. The recent national assessment found that Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan together had the highest number of recorded vulture nesting sites, with 105 sites between them. The most frequently observed include White-rumped Vulture, Egyptian Vulture, Bearded Vulture, Himalayan Griffon and Eurasian Griffon.

This makes Kangra an excellent region for travellers interested in combining Himalayan scenery with raptor watching.

Gangetic Plains

The Gangetic Plains are particularly relevant for the Slender-billed Vulture. When vultures fed on carcasses of livestock treated with the drug, they could suffer fatal kidney failure.

The consequences were enormous because species such as the White-rumped, Indian and Slender-billed Vultures declined dramatically.

The crisis demonstrated how a change in veterinary practices could have consequences far beyond farms and livestock.

Vulture Conservation in India

Conservation work today focuses on protecting nesting sites, monitoring populations, improving awareness and reducing exposure to harmful veterinary drugs.

The Wildlife Institute of India’s recent assessment demonstrates why continued monitoring is important. Researchers found significant differences between historical nesting locations and currently active sites.

For example, the assessment found:

Indian Vultures at 110 nesting sites

White-rumped Vultures at 69 sites

Slender-billed Vultures at 12 sites

Red-headed Vultures at 5 sites

Himalayan Griffons at 8 sites

Egyptian Vultures at 11 sites

Bearded Vultures at 1 site

These figures show both the importance of India’s remaining vulture habitats and the need for continued conservation efforts.

Tips for Responsible Vulture Watching

If you are planning a wildlife or birdwatching trip, follow responsible wildlife practices.

Maintain a safe distance: Never approach nesting vultures or attempt to get closer for a photograph.

Avoid disturbing feeding birds: A feeding site can be an important food source. But the country’s vultures deserve equal attention. From the White-rumped Vulture of the plains to the Himalayan Griffon soaring above mountain valleys, these birds represent some of India’s most fascinating wildlife.

A vulture-watching trip can also take travellers beyond traditional safari destinations.
