Padum – Zanskar Valley - Karsha Monastery - Raru - Anmu Village - Cha Village - Phuktal Monastery - Purne
Phuktal Monastery, also known as Phugtal Gompa, is one of the most isolated Buddhist monasteries in the world. Hidden inside the rugged Lungnak Valley of Zanskar, it is built around the opening of a massive natural cave, creating a dramatic cliffside setting that feels almost otherworldly. This ancient cave is believed to have been visited by monks and sages for more than 2,500 years, long before the monastery structure was established.
The monastery belongs to the Gelugpa (Yellow Hat) school of Tibetan Buddhism and houses stunning prayer halls, meditation caves, and living quarters for nearly 70 monks. The ambiance is serene, with echoing chants, flowing prayer flags, and breathtaking views of the Tsarap River carving through deep gorges.
This tour is perfect for spiritual seekers and adventure lovers. The journey includes scenic drives across remote Himalayan roads, gentle trekking routes through Zanskari villages, homestay experiences, and rare opportunities to meditate inside one of the region’s oldest cave shrines.
Arrive at Padum, the administrative and cultural center of Zanskar Valley. Surrounded by towering brown mountains, Padum is the best place to acclimatize before heading deeper into the valley. After checking into your guesthouse, relax and allow your body to adjust to the high altitude.
In the afternoon, visit the impressive Karsha Monastery, located on a hill overlooking Padum. This 11th-century monastery features ancient murals, prayer halls, and panoramic valley views. The gentle atmosphere creates the perfect beginning to your spiritual journey. Overnight stay in Padum.
