Baroli Temples Complex
The Baroli Temples Complex, also known as the Badoli Temples, is one of Rajasthan’s oldest and most important early-medieval temple clusters, located near Rawatbhata in Chittorgarh district, around 45 km from Kota. Set along the scenic eastern banks of the Chambal River, this ancient heritage site attracts pilgrims, historians, and art lovers.
Built in the 10th century CE under the Gurjara-Pratihara Empire, the complex originally comprised eight temples within a walled enclosure and a ninth temple situated nearly 1 km away. These temples are renowned for their Nagara-style architecture, intricate stone carvings, and beautifully sculpted shikharas.
The Baroli complex showcases rich religious diversity, with temples dedicated to Shiva, Vishnu (Vamana), Ganesha, Durga (Mahishasuramardini), and other forms. Among these, the Ghateshwara Mahadev Temple stands as the most iconic structure, featuring a well-preserved sanctum, mandapa, decorative pillars, lotus-patterned ceilings, and detailed external carvings.
Visitors can witness exquisite sculptures of apsaras, dancers, deities, narrative panels, and rare iconography such as the 16-armed Nataraja. While many temples remain intact, some structures show signs of historical damage yet still reflect the grandeur of early medieval craftsmanship.
Today, all nine temples are protected and maintained by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), preserving their spiritual ambience and architectural legacy.
Visiting Baroli thus offers not only a religious pilgrimage but also a deep dive into ancient Indian temple architecture, sculpture artistry, and regional history — making it a must-see for devotees, history buffs, and cultural travellers alike.
