The Panchachuli Base Camp Trek in the Pithoragarh district of Uttarakhand is one of the most beautiful and accessible treks in the Kumaon Himalayas. This trek combines stunning mountain views, peaceful villages, and the thrill of adventure — making it perfect for both beginners and experienced trekkers.
Traditionally, Dharchula was the starting point for the trek. However, with better roads now, you can easily reach the last inhabited villages — Dugtu and Dantu. These charming villages, surrounded by lush green meadows and snow-covered peaks, serve as the new base for the trek.
The trail follows the historic Darma Valley route, once used for trade with Tibet. Today, it’s a scenic path filled with panoramic mountain views, gushing streams, and serene landscapes. The short 10 km round trek from Dugtu and Dantu leads you right to the Panchachuli Base Camp, offering an unforgettable view of the majestic Panchachuli peaks.
Perfect for nature lovers and photography enthusiasts, this trek offers the best of both worlds — breathtaking mountain scenery and authentic Himalayan charm.
Your adventure to the Panchachuli Base Camp begins with an early morning pickup from Kathgodam, the gateway to the Kumaon Himalayas. The drive takes around 9–10 hours, leading you through charming hill towns and beautiful valleys.
Along the way, enjoy breathtaking views as you pass through Almora, Pithoragarh, and Jauljibi, each offering glimpses of traditional Kumaoni life and the majestic mountain landscape.
By evening, you’ll arrive in Dharchula, a peaceful border town situated on the banks of the Kali River, which forms the natural boundary between India and Nepal. After checking into your hotel or guesthouse, unwind with a short walk along the river and soak in the serene Himalayan atmosphere.
Overnight: Hotel / Guesthouse in Dharchula
After breakfast, the journey continues deeper into the stunning Darma Valley, one of the most scenic and untouched regions of the Kumaon Himalayas.
The 5–6 hour drive takes you through charming villages such as Sobla, Tawaghat, and New Sobla. As you move ahead, the landscape transforms — dense pine forests give way to terraced fields, glacial rivers, and traditional mountain hamlets.
By afternoon, you’ll reach Dantu Village, a peaceful settlement surrounded by snow-capped peaks and wide green meadows. Once here, settle into your cozy homestay or guesthouse, enjoy a cup of hot tea, and soak in the serenity of this remote Himalayan paradise.
Overnight: Homestay / Guesthouse in Dantu
Today is the highlight of the entire journey! After an early breakfast, set out on a scenic 5 km trek (one way) to the Panchachuli Base Camp.
The trail is moderately easy and passes through lush meadows, crystal-clear streams, and dense pine forests, with the majestic Panchachuli peaks always in view. As you approach the base camp, you’ll be greeted by a mesmerizing panorama of snow-covered mountains and glittering glaciers — a truly unforgettable Himalayan sight.
Spend some peaceful moments here, soaking in the natural beauty and capturing incredible photographs before retracing your steps back to Dantu Village by evening.
