Delhi - Bandhavgarh
Bandhavgarh National Park in Madhya Pradesh is one of India’s most exciting wildlife destinations. It is located in the Vindhyan ranges and is known for its thick forests, rolling hills, open valleys, and rich wildlife. The park beautifully combines natural beauty with ancient history, making it an ideal place for nature lovers, photographers, and adventure seekers.
The park was originally spread across just 105 sq. km., but over time it was expanded to 437 sq. km. Bandhavgarh became famous for its high density of tigers, which gave visitors a very good chance of spotting one in the wild. Even today, it continues to be a top destination for tiger sightings in India.
The landscape of Bandhavgarh is very diverse. About half of the area is covered with tall sal trees that provide shade and beauty to the forest. The higher regions of the hills have mixed forests with different types of trees, shrubs, and plant life. Towards the north, you will find long stretches of bamboo and grasslands where animals often gather to graze and rest. This mix of landscapes creates a safe and rich habitat for many species.
One of the main attractions inside the park is the Bandhavgarh Fort, which stands on a cliff 800 meters high. The fort is believed to be more than 2,000 years old. From the top, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the entire forest and its hills. The area around the fort is dotted with ancient caves showing carvings and Brahmi inscriptions from the 1st century BC. These caves tell stories of early settlements and the long history of the region.
In earlier times, Bandhavgarh was the private hunting ground of the royal family of Rewa. It became a national park in 1968, and it is also known as the place where the rare white tigers of Rewa were first discovered.
Bandhavgarh offers an unforgettable wildlife experience. Elephant-back rides were once popular for spotting tigers, and jeep safaris now remain the main way to explore the jungle. Apart from tigers, the park is home to many animals such as:
The park is also a paradise for bird lovers. More than 150 species of birds are found here, including winter visitors like the steppe eagle, partridges, hornbills, and water birds. During winter, many migratory birds settle around the water bodies, creating a lively and colorful environment.
Another special attraction is the trek to Bandhavgarh Fort, which offers a unique mix of adventure, history, and scenic beauty. Close to the fort, a small population of black buck lives safely, as predators do not usually reach this height.
Best Time to Visit: November to June is the best time to explore Bandhavgarh. The summer months (March to June) offer the highest chances of spotting tigers near water sources.
