Kanha National Park, located in the Mandla district of Madhya Pradesh, is one of India’s most prominent tiger reserves, covering around 1,945 sq. km. The park is known for its dense sal forests, open grasslands, and thriving wildlife, offering an exceptional safari experience.
The terrain features a horseshoe-shaped valley surrounded by the Mekal Hills, while the Surpan River flows through the central maidans (grasslands). These landscapes create ideal conditions for spotting wildlife in their natural habitat.
Kanha is widely known as “tiger country”, home to the Royal Bengal Tiger along with species like barasingha (swamp deer), chital, nilgai, gaur (Indian bison), and wild dogs (dhole). The park is also globally recognized for conserving the rare hard-ground barasingha, making it a significant conservation success story. Renowned zoologist George Schaller conducted one of the earliest scientific studies on tigers here.
Kanha National Park is divided into several core safari zones, each offering a unique landscape and wildlife experience:
Kanha Zone
This is the most popular zone, known for its vast meadows and frequent tiger sightings. It also offers excellent chances to spot barasingha in open grasslands.
Kisli Zone
Located close to the main entrance, Kisli features a mix of dense forests and open areas. It is ideal for spotting deer species, jackals, and occasionally tigers.
Mukki Zone
Mukki is known for its rich biodiversity and relatively quieter environment. Visitors often spot gaur, leopards, and a variety of birds here, along with good chances of tiger sightings.
Sarhi Zone
A less crowded and more peaceful zone, Sarhi is perfect for those looking to explore untouched forest areas. It offers sightings of wild dogs (dhole) and other wildlife in a serene setting.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Kanha National Park is from October to June, with March to June being ideal for tiger sightings. During summer, animals frequently gather near water sources, increasing the chances of spotting wildlife.

The nearest town to Kanha is Mandla, located at a distance of approximately 65 km. It serves as the closest urban center and a convenient point for travelers heading to the park.
