A Sacred Jain Pilgrimage Site
Panchmeru Tirth, often referred to as Panchmeru Nandishwara Temple or simply part of revered Jain temple complexes, holds a special place in Jainism. The term “Panchmeru” draws from Jain cosmology, symbolizing the five sacred mountains (Meru peaks) in the Jambudvipa continent, particularly associated with the Nandishwara DvipaтАФan eternal island where special worship of Tirthankaras occurs.
While “Panchmeru Pooja” is a ritualistic worship involving 88 idols representing temples on these cosmic mountains, several physical temples in India embody this concept through their architecture and idols.
Panchmeru in Songadh Tirth (Palitana Area)
One prominent Panchmeru Nandishwara Temple is located in Songadh Tirth, near the world-famous Palitana Temples (Shatrunjaya Hill) in Bhavnagar district, Gujarat. This site features a cluster of Digambar Jain temples, including:
- Swadhyay Mandir
- Mahavir Kund Digambar Temple
- Simandhar Swami Mandir
- Digambar Jain Paramgam Temple
- Panchmeru Nandishwara Temple
- Samavasaran Mandir
Though not as vast as the main Palitana complex, Songadh is deeply revered for its serene atmosphere and dedication to multiple Tirthankaras. Pilgrims often visit it alongside Palitana for a complete spiritual experience.
Panchmeru Temple on Girnar Hill
Another notable mention is the Panchmeru Temple (also called Panchabai’s Temple) on Mount Girnar in Junagadh, GujaratтАФone of the most ancient and sacred Jain pilgrimage sites. Built in the 19th century (VS 1859), it stands near the Adabadji Temple and forms part of the larger Girnar Jain temple group dedicated primarily to Lord Neminath, the 22nd Tirthankara.
Girnar itself is considered one of the Pancha Tirth (five principal shrines) for Shvetambara Jains, alongside Palitana, Ashtapad, Shikharji, and Dilwara.
Spiritual Significance
In Jain tradition, Panchmeru represents eternal worship on Nandishwara Dvipa, where 88 temples (52 eternal + others) house idols of Tirthankaras in meditation. Visiting these earthly replicas is believed to bring peace, spiritual merit, and a connection to cosmic divinity.
Many Jain sites, including those in Rehli-Patnaganj (Madhya Pradesh), feature dedicated Panchmeru Jinalayas with intricate carvings and multiple idols.
