Mungathala (also spelled Mungthala or historically Mundasthala/Mungasthala) is an ancient village in the Sirohi district of Rajasthan, India, renowned as a significant Śvetāmbara Jain pilgrimage destination. Located in the scenic Arbudagiri region near Mount Abu, this site holds deep spiritual importance due to its association with Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara of Jainism.
Historical and Spiritual Significance
The village dates back centuries, with references in 12th-century epigraphs as Mundasthala and a 14th-century inscription calling it Mahatirtha (great pilgrimage site). The primary attraction is the Śvetāmbara Jain temple dedicated to Lord Mahavira (Mulnayak Bhagwan Mahavir Swami). This tirth is particularly revered because Lord Mahavira is believed to have meditated here during his time as a monk.
The temple, constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries AD, has undergone several renovations:
- In Vikram Samvat 1959 (Vaishakh Sud 10th) by Acharya Shree Mahendra Surishwarji.
- In Vikram Samvat 2015 by Acharya Shree Vijay Harsh Surishwarji.
- Most recently in Vikram Samvat 2067 (Fagun Sud 2nd) by Acharya Shree GunRatnaSuriShwarji.
The site also features a historic Saiva temple dedicated to Mogadesvara, highlighting the region’s rich multi-faith heritage.
