Overview

Jainism in Karnataka

Jainism in Karnataka flourished under the Ganga, the Chalukya and Rashtrakuta dynasties. Due to the impetus given by them, Jainism prospered like never before and what we see today is the exquisite creativity that flowered under these dynasties. The patrons of Jainism in Karnataka were mainly the Kadambas, the Gangas followed by the Chalukyas and then the Rashtrakutas. Today the state is home to a number of Jain monuments, such as temples, Gommata statues and stambhas. There are a number of monuments relating to the Jain religion in Karnataka. The Jain monuments include smaller shrines, Jain temples, Gommata statues and Sthambas. Moodabidri is home to the 1000 Pillar Jain temple. Shravanabelagola has the world famous monolithic statue, Gommateshwara statue. Similar Monolithic statues of Lord Bahubali can be also seen in Venur, Dharmasthala, Karkala and Mysore. North Karnataka is a major Jain belt that has numerous Jain Basadis set amidst picturesque scenery. Pillars being the main motif of Jain architecture, intricately carved stone iconography and larger than life statues make for an interesting trip though the major Jain basadis of Karnataka.
