Kolanupaka Village
The Kolanupaka Jain Temple, also known as Kulpakji, is an ancient and highly revered Jain pilgrimage site located in Kolanupaka village, around 80 km from Warangal and 77 km from Hyderabad. Believed to be approximately 2,000 years old, this temple is one of the oldest Jain shrines in Southern India and a major sacred site for the Śvetāmbara Jain community. Over history, Kolanupaka was a flourishing Jain center, with more than 20 inscriptions indicating its rich spiritual and cultural legacy.
The temple houses the idols of Lord Rishabhanatha (Adinath), Lord Neminath, and Lord Mahavira, with the idol of Lord Mahavira being particularly unique — a 130 cm tall statue carved from a single piece of green jade stone, locally called Manikyaswami. The temple’s interior features red sandstone walls and white marble pillars, combining ancient craftsmanship with modern restoration. A major renovation was undertaken in the late 20th century, employing over 150 artisans from Rajasthan and Gujarat, preserving its original sanctum while enhancing structural beauty.
Situated within a 20-acre complex that includes dharamshalas and guest facilities, the temple is surrounded by other historic sites such as the Someshwara Temple, adding to its spiritual and heritage value. Due to its proximity to major cities and good connectivity, Kolanupaka makes for an excellent half-day or full-day pilgrimage and heritage excursion, ideal for both Jain devotees and cultural travelers.
Start early in the morning from Hyderabad or Warangal and enjoy a scenic drive to Kolanupaka village, located about 77–80 km away. Light refreshments can be taken en route while soaking in the countryside views.
On arrival, begin your visit at the Kolanupaka Jain Temple, one of the oldest Jain shrines in South India. Explore the sanctum housing Lord Mahavira’s jade statue, Lord Rishabhanatha, and Lord Neminath. The temple’s red sandstone interiors and white marble pillars reflect both its ancient heritage and meticulous restoration. Spend time in prayer or quiet meditation amidst the serene surroundings.
Next, take a guided walk around the temple complex to learn about its 2,000-year-old history, inscriptions, and architectural highlights. If available, visit the attached museum and the dharamshala to understand Jain pilgrimage traditions.
Afterward, enjoy a traditional vegetarian Jain lunch at a nearby restaurant or dharamshala. Following lunch, visit the Someshwara Temple, an ancient Shiva shrine built by the Chalukyas, known for its stone carvings and peaceful ambiance.
In the afternoon, take a short drive through Kolanupaka village to experience local life and explore small handicraft shops. A tea or coffee break provides time to relax before the journey back.
Return to Hyderabad or Warangal in the evening, completing a spiritually enriching and culturally immersive full-day tour.
