Religious Significance of Shri Sammed (Sammet) Shikharji

Shikharji holds a unique and unparalleled position in the Jain faith. The name "Sammet Shikhar" means peak of concentration — a reference to the deep meditation through which the Tirthankaras achieved the ultimate liberation here. Among the 24 Tirthankaras of this cosmic cycle, 20 attained moksha on this very hill, including Lord Parshvanatha (the 23rd Tirthankara), who is said to have attained nirvana here in 772 BCE.

Shikharji is recognized as one of the Panch Tirth (five principal Jain pilgrimage sites) by Shwetambar Jains, and is equally revered by Digambara Jains. Archaeological evidence suggests Jain pilgrimage to this site dates back at least 1,500 years, with the earliest literary mention found in the Jain scripture Jñātṛdhārmakātha from the 6th century BCE.

Unlike other holy sites that are associated with the birth or preaching of a saint, Sammed Shikharji represents the final and supreme achievement — moksha itself. This gives it an emotional and spiritual weight that is impossible to overstate for devout Jains.

The 27 km Tongi Parikrama — Complete Guide

The spiritual heart of the Sammed Shikharji Yatra is the Tongi Parikrama — a circular trek of approximately 27 km covering all 20 Tonk (shrine) peaks on Parasnath Hill. Each Tonk represents the site where a specific Tirthankara attained moksha, and pilgrims pay reverence at each one.

The trek begins and ends at Madhuban village. Most pilgrims start early in the morning (3–4 AM) to complete the parikrama in daylight. The full circuit typically takes 10–14 hours depending on pace and halts. Physically fit pilgrims can complete it in 10 hours; elderly pilgrims or those halting longer at each tonk may take 14–16 hours.

Best Time to Visit Sammed Shikharji

Sammed Shikharji can be visited year-round, but the experience varies significantly by season. Here is a season-wise breakdown to help you plan your yatra:

October to March — ⭐ Best Season
This is the ideal window for the Sammed Shikharji Yatra. Temperatures at the 4,480 ft summit range from 8°C to 25°C, making the 27 km Tongi Parikrama very comfortable. October–November and February–March are especially lovely, with clear skies and minimal rainfall. The period around Paryushan Parva (Aug–Sep) and Diwali sees the highest pilgrim footfall of the year.

April to June — Acceptable but Warm
Summer months see temperatures climbing to 35°C+ in the base areas. The hilltop remains relatively cooler, but the trek can be taxing in afternoon heat. Early morning departures (3–4 AM) are strongly recommended if you are visiting during this period.

July to September — Monsoon Season (Avoid if Possible)
Jharkhand receives heavy monsoon rainfall from July through September. The Tongi Parikrama path becomes slippery and hazardous, and trekking is not recommended for elderly pilgrims. However, this is a deeply popular time for devout Jains who come for Paryushan and the emotional significance of the rain-soaked hills.
