Palitana Jain Yatra – Shatrunjaya Hills

The Shatrunjaya Hills in Gujarat are home to a magnificent complex of Jain temples, locally known as Derasars. Collectively referred to as the Palitana Temples, this sacred site is one of the most revered pilgrimage destinations in Jainism. The total number of temples varies by source but is estimated to be around 1,000. Among these, 108 are large temples, while the rest are smaller shrines forming part of the Chauvisi ensemble—24 identical shrines dedicated to each of the 24 Tirthankaras.

These temples are beautifully arranged in fortified clusters, each known as a Tonk or Tuk. In total, the Palitana temple complex comprises nine Tuks, gracefully spread across the two ridges of the Shatrunjaya Hills, showcasing the devotion, artistry, and architectural grandeur of Jain culture.

The Nine Tuks of Palitana:

  • Sheth Narasinh Keshavji Tuk
  • Chaumukhji Tuk (Sava-Som Tuk)
  • Chhipavasahi Tuk
  • Sakar Vasahi Tuk
  • Nandishwar Tuk
  • Hema Vasahi Tuk
  • Modi Tuk
  • Bala Vasahi Tuk
  • Motisha Sheth Tuk (Ghety Bari Tuk)

FAQ About Palitana Jain Yatra

Q. Why is Palitana considered so sacred in Jainism?
Palitana is believed to be the only hill across the world where no less than 23 out of 24 Jain Tirthankaras attained salvation. The hill is therefore considered a “Teerth Raj” (King of Pilgrimages) and every Jain is expected to visit it once in a lifetime.
Q. How many steps are there to climb Shatrunjaya Hill? Is it difficult?
The ascent involves around 3,500–3,800 stone steps, taking approx. 2–3 hours one way depending on fitness. For elderly pilgrims or those unable to walk, palki/doli (chair carried by porters) services are available payable directly.
Q. Can we stay overnight on the top of the hill?
No. Overnight stay is strictly prohibited on Shatrunjaya Hill due to its sacred status. All visitors must descend the same day. Accommodation is arranged in Bhavnagar or nearby area as per the tour itinerary.
Q. Which is the main temple to visit at Palitana?
The Chaumukh (Adinath) Temple is the most revered shrine, dedicated to Lord Adinath (Rishabhanatha), the first Jain Tirthankara. Its four-faced design represents spiritual enlightenment in all directions.
Q. What is the best time to visit Palitana?
The best time for pilgrimage is October to March, when the weather is pleasant. Avoid peak summer months (April–June) due to intense heat. Many devotees prefer visiting during Paryushana and Kartik Poornima (festive periods).
Q. Is photography allowed at the temples?
Photography is restricted at the temple premises due to religious customs.
Q. Are there food and water facilities available during the climb?
Not allowed
Q. What type of clothing should be worn during the pilgrimage?
Visitors are expected to wear modest, comfortable, and cotton-based clothing. Avoid leather products and maintain decorum. Good walking shoes or sandals with grip are essential.
Q. Are non-Jains allowed to visit Palitana temples?
Yes, anyone respectful of the sacred traditions is welcome. Non-Jain visitors are expected to follow guidelines regarding dress code, vegetarianism, and maintaining temple sanctity.
Q. How much time is required to visit the Palitana temple complex?
Typically, the complete journey including ascent, darshan, exploration of major temples, and descent takes 5–6 hours. Early morning start is recommended.
