Udayagiri And Khandagiri
The Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves are among the most important Jain heritage sites in eastern India. Located near Bhubaneswar, these ancient caves date back to the 2nd century BCE and are closely associated with Jain monks and spiritual practices. Carved out of natural rock hills, the caves reflect the rich history, art, and architecture of early Jainism.
Udayagiri, meaning “Sunrise Hill,” has around 18 caves and is more elaborate compared to Khandagiri. The most famous cave here is Rani Gumpha, known for its beautiful carvings, royal scenes, and detailed sculptures. Another important highlight is the Hathi Gumpha inscription, which provides historical information about King Kharavela, a great patron of Jainism.
The caves were used by Jain monks for meditation and living. The artistic carvings on the walls depict scenes of daily life, animals, dancers, and religious symbols, giving a glimpse into ancient culture.
Khandagiri, meaning “Broken Hill,” has around 15 caves. These caves are simpler and were mainly used as residential quarters by Jain monks. One of the well-known caves here is Ananta Gumpha, which features carvings of animals and symbols.
At the top of Khandagiri hill, visitors can enjoy a peaceful atmosphere along with a panoramic view of the surrounding area. The site is still considered sacred and attracts Jain pilgrims.
A visit to these caves offers a mix of spirituality, history, and natural beauty. The surroundings are calm, making it ideal for meditation and exploration. Walking through the caves allows visitors to experience how monks lived thousands of years ago.
The best time to visit is between October and March, when the weather is pleasant. Early mornings or evenings are ideal for sightseeing and photography.
